Volkswagen Golf GTI Equipment, Accessories & Interior

As you’d expect for a car with list prices starting around £25,000, the Volkswagen Golf GTI comes with a decent level of standard equipment from the off. However, there’s also a number of choice options to help distinguish your GTI from another.

Differentiating the new VW Golf GTI from other Golf variants are a set of 18inch Austin alloy wheels, a sports bodykit with special side sills, gloss black rear diffuser, smoked LED rear lights and a pair of exhaust pipes, each located on at the corners of the car’s rear.

Inside the GTI, whether three or five-door, uses the same general layout and configuration as any other Golf in the range. That means it boasts some incredibly high-quality materials and switchgear, and comes fitted with dual-zone climate control and a touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity as standard.

On top of this the GTI models come with Jacara tartan cloth sports seats, GTI branded sports steering wheel, black roof-lining, red ambient lighting, golf-ball style gearlever, a bespoke instrument cluster, different interior trim and alloy pedal caps.

There’s plenty of ways to upgrade your GTI, not least of which is the optional Performance Pack. Adding another 10bhp, enlarged brake discs front and rear and an electronic locking differential, for those that enjoy the art of driving it’s the only GTI to choose.

Spotting one will be tough though, as the only giveaway to the Performance Pack car’s potency is the GTI badge embossed on the, already red, brake callipers.

But if you want to make your VW Golf GTI stand out from the crowd, a more sensible option might be the 19inch Santiago alloy wheels.

And inside you can add leather seats, touchscreen sat-nav – with proximity sensing and smartphone style pinch and swipe functions – and the excellent Dynaudio upgraded hifi system with a 10 channel amplifier and eight speakers.

Another new introduction for the Golf GTI is the Car-Net system which adds a set of new mobile online services to the car’s infotainment system. Allowing for up-to-date traffic information to be translated into dynamic sat-nav guidance the system will also display Google street view images while the sat-nav uses realistic Google Earth satellite images for the mapping.

There’s no prizes for guessing that the VW Golf GTI safety results have been exemplary, the car being awarded the maximum five-stars for its test by Euro NCAP.

That’s partly down to the seven airbags fitted as standard to this car, but also for the array of other safety devices to be found within the VW.

On top of the usual ESP stability system, the Golf GTI also comes with Automatic Post-Collision Braking which applies the stoppers to a car immediately after an accident, lessening the chance of making contact with other vehicles in the aftermath.

There’s also a Pre-Crash system which tensions seatbelts and closes the gap on opened windows and sunroofs to improve the effectiveness of the airbags if a crash is imminent.

It’s easier to avoid a bump thanks to the Front Assist and City Emergency Braking which warn the driver if the car in front is getting too close and braking the car to a halt if it stops in front of them (if travelling at less than 18mph).

A road sign recognition program detects speed limits and displays them on the dashboard and Light Assist controls the high and low beam output automatically in the face of oncoming traffic. Dynamic Light Assist does the same, but keeps high beam on above 37mph and simply masks the output only where it will potentially disturb other road users.

Lane Assist keeps you on track when travelling on the motorway, and finally there’s Automatic Distance Control, a radar based cruise control that will maintain a set distance from the vehicle in front. A Driver Alert system monitors the driver’s concentration levels and recommends stopping for a break if needs be too.

VW Golf GTI practicality; traditionally something of a strong point for this car, and there’s no change with the new model.

There’s ample door bins, and with typical attention to detail their lined interior ensures that items don’t rattle around.

In front of the gearlever there’s a covered cubby, which also houses the iPod/USB connector and keeps your device out of sight.

Underneath the front armrest is a sizable storage area, while the glovebox is a decent size as well – you’ll also notice it is fully lined too.

Adults can travel comfortably in the back too, and the five-door option – remember the Astra VXR and RenaultSport Megane are three-door only – means getting in and out is made easy too.

And while boot size has never been the VW Golf’s strongpoint the GTI’s 380-litres of space is better than the 316-litres found in the Ford Focus ST. Dropping the split-fold rear bench increases this to 1,270-litres.
