Buy Back My TDI! A community site to address the VW emissions scandal

UPDATE 2015-11-06: Prices for several VW TDI models have dropped more than 10% since the scandal broke six weeks ago. Some of the TDI models have also seen significant drops in value compared to their non-TDI vehicles.

UPDATE 2015-10-23: A month into the scandal now, the fair market values for a number of TDI models are showing significant differences to the comparable non-TDI models. Specifically, the 2013 Audi A3 and the 2012 and 2013 Golf models show a drop in value of about 5.2% to 6%, while their non-TDI comparators have either gained slightly in value or lost very little. It should also be noted, that while the average value of TDI models has decreased more than that of the non-TDI models, there are several exceptions for different models and years. For example, each of the 2009 through 2013 Jetta TDI models have lost less in value than the non-TDI versions.

UPDATE 2015-10-09: Despite the recent news that Kelley Blue Book prices for VW TDI models have fallen around 13% since the scandal broke, the publicly available numbers below do not reflect any significant changes in value, with the exception again of the 2013 Audi A3.

UPDATE 2015-10-02: The new numbers have a couple of interesting data points: the price for the 2013 Audi A3 2.0 TDI Premium Wagon 4D is lagging behind significantly (more than 5%) compared with to the non TDI model of that year. Conversely, the 2012 2.0 TDI Sedan 4D has actually appreciated in value compared to the benchmark prices.

Looking at the first datum more closely, it turns out that the decrease in value for the 2013 A3 TDI Wagon is $548 while the non TDI model actually became more expensive compared to the benchmark price, going from $17,848 to $18,395.

Overall, the two models above may well be outliers as prices just have not moved that much. While new car sales for VW have staid flat for the month of September (compared with a double digit gains for other major manufacturers), there are some reports that the market for used TDI models affected by the scandal is rather brisk.

2015-09-25. There are no significant changes in the first update to the fair purchase prices of the affected TDI models. Any price decrease (shown in red) is within 5% of the price decrease in the comparator model used.
